Which is the right job?

I can remember times when there had been such a great buzz about securing a "government job"... as recently as 6 or 7 years ago. But students fantasizing of a government job has long gone since the boom of IT industry in India.

Currently, its all about getting a job in an IT industry... with atleast one software company being established in every nook and corner of the cities. Which is the best one to settle in? A fortune 50, fortune 100, fortune 500 or a medium size or an early stage enterprise...

The options are plenty. Why do people tend to settle in popular organisations always??? Ofcourse, the visibility and reliability factors play a major factor when choosing a career. These reputed enterprises definitely seem to offer both of these. Are the benefits offered by early stage companies overlooked?

From my experience, when working for a company early in its development, the scope of an employee’s role can be much broader than at a more mature company. Employees have more visibility into the overall goals and objectives of the company and are able to see the direct impact they are having on the company’s success.

Also, as I had seen, those people who are attracted to working at early-stage technology companies are typically smart, passionate, and looking to make a difference. This doesn't mean those working at bigger companies are dumb but you get the idea!!!

If you think salaries are the real cause for this scenario, then check out the average salaries offered by early stage companies in USA here.
http://www.indeed.com/salary?cat=big+companies&q1=%22Fortune+50%22&l1=&q2=%22Fortune+100%22&l2=&q3=%22Fortune+500%22&l3=&q4=%22Fortune+1000%22&l4=&q5=%22Early+Stage%22&l5=

What makes early stage companies less preferable here in India??? Is it lack of awareness, lack of negotiation skills, unreliability factor or something much more critical???

Manoj, could you elaborate the phrase From my experience :)

Its ok. I agree with most of the points u said, but the post looks completely biased to start-up companies.
Most people here, try to enter into some company, if they have more options, they simply choose the company based on pay. But after getting into the industry, they may look at other chances based on their interest. There are lots of factors that determine the decision to choose a company.
1. Nature of work.
2. Pay.
3. Brand name.
4. Risk.
5. Location
6. Future plans
7. Other options
These are a few simple points that I will consider before changing the company. We cant simply say, a startup company will have more challenging work or a well established company wont have any such.
It also depends on the team, the project and many more.

But, I strongly agree with the your point that in a start up company, the visibility and responsibility will be very high.

YUP, absolutely... there is NO denial that large corporations dont offer these challenges... I am just wondering why people seem skeptical about early stage companies...

Otherwise, I agree with what you said... Yeah, all those things definitely matter...

Oops I think I missed you answer one of your queries...

From my experience - This plainly means that I work for an early stage enterprise and my experience out there...

There is nothing to wonder... most people choose the first company which ever gives them the job, and whichever pays them more, if they have multiple jobs.

Just think once, why u joined the company that u are currently present. It is most likely to be the first company that hired u. Am I correct?

Now, after getting into a company, unless u r really frustrated with the work, there will be some resistance in our mind to switch. It might be because we dont want to switch too frequently or a comprimise like "Known devil is better than an unknown angel".

@ Prabhakar
haha... yeah, I agree with u man... "Known devil is better than an unknown angel"... but i am not sure if we moving away from the topic... I dont want ppl to switch anyway as long as feel fine with what they have...

hey prabhakar, fyi, this is NOT my first job... i worked with an NGO initially but i wanted to work in the technology industry and so i switched over to this company mate...

Thanks for all your feedback... It helps me understand ppl's views... Keep visiting... :)

hi manoj,
today money and brand matter a lot...
but i think, if any onw really wants to learn then he should start from smaller companies where there is more scope for betterment...
as today multi-skill are always prefer and if you work with just started or small companies you are more emotonally touched which tend to increase ur efficience and psychological factor do matter team work and closeness with peers is more in small company and other social and emotional needs were also taken care of...

@ Mona

thats so true... u r emotionally attached pretty much to a smaller company... even if it under-performs sometimes... but i think if the same corporate culture is maintained wen a company grows, then this kinda attachment can b seen in bigger companies too... like wat Google does... they dont have a complex corporate hierarchy... just a 3-tier team... Directors, Managers and Developers...

Thanks a lot for your views... Keep visiting, Mona :)

As you said the visibility and reliability factors play a major role..... But do certainly agree with you that working with a company from its early stage do gives you lots of experience and work into objectives of the company.

btw the new template looks good.
