Orkut fuss - Fake profiles
Read this post on Mumbai mirror.
Being an Orkut user, I can feel the trouble caused to this girl. Really a sad incident on Orkut. We come across several warnings about the level of details you can publish on Web (not just on Orkut) where such details become public. I believe those details which might NOT benefit you professionally need NOT be put on web at all. If you still wanna leverage the potential of web for your personal things, I guess a secure access system must be set up for your family or friends (login etc).
Keeping this issue aside, how are we going to deal with fake profiles (either an inexistent real person or a duplicate portrayal) ??? Internet is popular because of its quick processing system - whether it is an account approval, communication or any other information processing for that matter. Is it necessary for web portals to verify the credibility of new accounts? Will doing this affect the "efficiency" that internet boasts???
In long term, will it be necessary for us to build a centralised repository to store user profiles which can be accessed by these web portals when creating accounts? Just like IANA controls IP addresses, would a body be required to control the user profiles too???

hi manoj,
i think you are right in stating a regulatory body for user profiles.. internet has just open doors to a new virtual world..but its side effects are start showing its symptoms and its time to have soem check on it otherwise.....
prevention is always better than cure..so this seems to be right here also..
Nice thoughts Manoj. I feel something of the sort that you have mentioned should be done to keep a check on Internet predators.
You've got a nice blog. Thanks for visiting my blog. Hope to see you around :)

Great, both of you guys agree with me :)
Thanks for your feedback but I think the real issue is in determinging "that" regulatory body. I would NOT vote for IANA, Verizon or Verisign... NOT even Google for that matter... I think we have to come up with something acceptable by everyone :)
Thanks guys for your comments...
Cheers
