What does NOT make me mad?

TRING...TRING...
TRING... TRING...

It's my mobile ringing at 11 AM interrupting me when answering some emails busily. Its a girl calling /* Translation: I didn't go mad ;) */

Caller: Good morning sir
Me: Ye, good morning
Caller: I am calling from ICICI Bank Credit Card division sir
Me: Ok

USUAL ME (This is how I go mad whenever I got similar calls in the past)
Me: Ok, so...
Caller: Would you be interested in owning a credit card, sir?
Me: Nope, not interested
Caller: Why sir?
Me: No, I am not interested
Caller: Sir, but this is a lifetime free credit card sir and you... (I try to interrupt her campaign)
Me: Ok, I am not interested. Thanks for your call... (and I hang up the call)
Caller: (I dont see any reason for her NOT to grumble on me before hanging the call)

TODAY's ME
Me: Ok
Caller: Would you be interested in owning a credit card, sir?
Me: Yeah sure, but I already own one /* although I dont have one */
Caller: Ok cool sir. Do you own an LIC insurance plan sir?

Caller: Ah...oh...ok... Thank you very much for your time, sir!!!
Me: You are welcome
/* Good News: The call ended without any grumble on either side, Yay!!! */

Asian Games champions ignored for torch relay

I hate to copy a post title but can't resist after reading this article on The Hindu today.

Firstly, let me confirm that I'm NOT a zero-sum personality who believes in other's failures for his/her success. It is ABOSLUTELY fine for anyone to get a chance to lit the Asian Games Torch.

But it is slightly disappointing to exclude some of the most prominent athletes of the nation. One notable personality is Sriram Singh, one of only six Indian athletes to have made the Olympic finals. Some more prominent personalities are missed out too. Are we forgetting to offer the tribute we are supposed to?

It remains mystery as how Rachna Govil is able to secure a place almost always despite her controversies

Ofcourse I agree that no system can be perfect and no selection will satisfy everyone. BUT are we playing a fair game?

The torch has already arrived here in India and will be here until October 12. It is unreal to expect Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to change the names it has already picked for this year. But I hope whistle-blowing such activities will be the LEAST tribute we can offer to those who served the nation. Lets hope for the best in the forthcoming years.

I did my part!!!

Orkut fuss - Fake profiles

Read this post on Mumbai mirror.

Being an Orkut user, I can feel the trouble caused to this girl. Really a sad incident on Orkut. We come across several warnings about the level of details you can publish on Web (not just on Orkut) where such details become public. I believe those details which might NOT benefit you professionally need NOT be put on web at all. If you still wanna leverage the potential of web for your personal things, I guess a secure access system must be set up for your family or friends (login etc).

Keeping this issue aside, how are we going to deal with fake profiles (either an inexistent real person or a duplicate portrayal) ??? Internet is popular because of its quick processing system - whether it is an account approval, communication or any other information processing for that matter. Is it necessary for web portals to verify the credibility of new accounts? Will doing this affect the "efficiency" that internet boasts???

In long term, will it be necessary for us to build a centralised repository to store user profiles which can be accessed by these web portals when creating accounts? Just like IANA controls IP addresses, would a body be required to control the user profiles too???

Are industries shrinking?

GigaOM's post seems to be timely when we are discussing about the jobs in IT industry

A whopping 100,000 job cuts in the telecom industry. Although this is not going to directly affect our friends in IT industry, there is strong corelation in service-oriented industries.

Most Indian companies are (and will be) recruiting thousands of students and professionals every here. And most of these companies are offering software development services to western businesses - be it Infosys, TCS, Wipro or most other companies (if not all).

It is all good as long as they have projects to work on. But what happens if these companies loose bids to work on such projects? Is it a good idea for Indian IT companies to remain service-oriented despite their maturity over years?

Google has less than 10000 engineers on its payroll (across the globe) but I feel its the best company when it comes to fostering innovation. Ofcourse, there is NO doubt that Indian companies are extremely efficient, but are we missing on being innovative?

Another post by Shailaja Neelakantan clearly shows the "me too" attitude of most Indian entrepreneurs. According to the article, it turns that the investors are ready but entrepreneurs doesn't seem to be have an appealing business plan.

With all IT engineers across the nation choosing to work under these entrepreneurs for a service oriented company, are they betting on their creativity and missing the opportunity of being innovative?

Do the current enterpreneurs need to inculcate an appropriate work culture and aim to build innovative products? Or is it necessary for the engineers to inculcate entrepreneurial qualities?

Which approach would yield quicker and reliable results?
